Cary Medical Center has a tradition of very accommodating visiting hours and visitor services; we believe that seeing family and friends during a patient's hospital stay is an important part of their overall care and recovery. Because all of our patient rooms are private, visitors and patients have the opportunity to have extended visits and/or larger groups of visitors if the patient wishes. We also fully respect the rights of patients who choose to restrict visitations or who require special accommodations for their family. We will do whatever we canto take care of not only the patient's needs, but also the needs of their support people.
Visiting hours
Normal visiting hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., but other arrangements can be made by talking with the patient's nurse. We offer overnight rooming options for families of patients, including a cot in the patient's room and our Hayward Suite. Parents of children who are hospitalized may also room with their child. Children are welcome to visit when accompanied by a parent or guardian. Please note that the patient's physician may request limiting visiting hours depending on the patient's condition.
Visitor waiting areas
Comfortable waiting areas for visitors are located in the main lobby and near the entrance of the Acute Care Unit, Special Care Unit, and the Maternal Child Unit.
Hayward Suite
To make it easier for our patients' families to be close by, we have a special suite at Cary Medical Center called the Hayward Suite. This suite provides a comfortable, private place for family members of patients who have a serious medical condition to gather and rest without having to leave the hospital. Many of the conveniences of home are available in our Hayward Suite, including a living room with recliners, a sleep sofa, and television; a kitchenette with table, chairs, microwave, coffee maker, toaster, and refrigerator; a bedroom with two twin beds and a chest of drawers; and a private bathroom with a shower. There is no charge to use our Hayward Suite; arrangements for using the suite can be made through our nursing staff.
Our suite was established in memory of Dr. and Mrs. Mead Hayward, a longtime pediatrician and his wife, who were both very involved in community activities and organizations during their many years in our area.
Meals for visitors
Visitors are welcome to purchase meals in the cafeteria or order a guest tray for $3.50 from the nurse in advance of the next meal. A continental breakfast is available from 7:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and full service breakfast from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Lunch is served from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and the evening meal is served from 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Salad bar and sandwiches are offered daily from11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Free coffee is available in the cafeteria and by the information desk at the main hospital entrance. Vending machines are on the main and lower levels throughout the hospital. If you are a Seniority member, please contact the Health Education Services staff for your visitor meal tickets at extensions 1167 or 1143; on weekends and holidays call the Admissions Office at extension 1126.
Special Occasions
Please feel free to tell us if your friend or family member is in the hospital on their birthday, anniversary, or other special occasion. We will do whatever we can to help celebrate the occasion, including delivering a special meal, videotaping a family event, decorating the room, or assisting with other activities appropriate for the occasion. Simply inform our nursing staff about these special circumstances.
Veterans' Chapel
A Veterans' Chapel is available for use by visitors and patients in the Maine Veterans' Home and Cary Medical Center. This relaxing and restful atmosphere was designed for meditation and quiet time. The chapel features a stained glass window crafted by a Maine artist and a crucifix, which was imported from Italy. We invite you and your family to use the chapel at any time. The chapel is located in the connecting corridor between the hospital and the Veterans Home. If you or your family needs directions please feel free to ask any member of our staff.
Smoking Policy
For the health and safety of everyone at Cary Medical Center,our campus is tobacco-free. This means that use of tobacco products (cigarettes, cigars, chewing tobacco, etc.) is strictly prohibited in the hospital or on the hospital grounds, including in vehicles on hospital property. These restrictions extend to all staff, patients, visitors, vendors, or any other individual on the hospital campus. We realize that adhering to this policy may be very difficult for patients and their families, particularly during a stressful health crisis. To overcome this challenge, we offer options that can help control tobacco addictions, including a stop smoking program and nicotine replacement therapies. Additionally, individuals can have one-on-one smoking cessation counseling on an outpatient basis for a minimal charge.
