The
branch of medicine that covers diseases of the eye is ophthalmology. Physicians who specialize in this field,
called ophthalmologists, are generally categorized as surgeons because they are
trained to perform surgery to repair or prevent vision problems. This is the major difference between
ophthalmologists and optometrists, who are also eye and vision
specialists. Both types of physicians
can diagnose, manage, and treat eye problems, but ophthalmologists perform more
complex eye surgery.
