Orthopedics is the branch of medicine that focuses on the musculoskeletal system, which includes bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and joints.  Physicians who specialize in this field are called orthopedic surgeons.  They typically perform procedures to repair broken bones, replace damaged joints, reattach torn tendons or ligaments, and relieve pain from disorders caused by acute or chronic conditions of the musculoskeletal system, such as arthritis or congenital deformities.
