Cary Medical Center's picture archiving and
communication system (PACS) is a computer network dedicated to the storage,
retrieval, and distribution of images generated by diagnostic tests, such as
ultrasounds, mammograms, MRIs, CT scans, and x-rays. This technology makes it possible for
healthcare providers to electronically view and interpret radiology
images. This is especially useful when
patients require evaluation or care by providers not located at the
hospital. Additionally, because PACS
turns information into electronic files, it replaces hard-copies of medical
images, such as x-ray films. This
significantly reduces the need for storage space, makes retrieval of images
much easier, and improves the ability to protect and save patients' imaging
records.
