Spiral CT (computed tomography) uses
specialized x-ray equipment to obtain a cross-section view of body tissues and
organs. Unlike other radiology
equipment, the spiral CT provides highly detailed 2- and 3-D images of soft tissue,
bone, and blood vessels. The unit gets
its name because of the spiral path of the scanner around the body - this path
gathers continuous data with no gaps between images. Its open design is comfortable and
claustrophobic friendly.
Cary Medical
Center's spiral CT is among the most
advanced imaging units available today and is up to 10 times faster than
standard radiology equipment. Full body
scans can be done in less than one minute; chest, abdomen, and head scans can
often be done in less than 10 seconds.
The speed of the scan makes spiral CT a crucial diagnostic tool for
trauma or critically ill patients, and the exceptionally high quality images
may reduce the need for more invasive, higher cost, and complex procedures.
