Pharmacy

Cary Medical Center’s Pharmacy team is responsible for filling thousands of prescriptions every year.  Getting the correct medication to patients as quickly as possible is a critical piece in the delivery of healthcare services.  Our pharmacy team takes great pride in accurately and efficiently filling every prescription for the health and safety of our patients.

Unlike many hospitals of similar size, Cary Medical Center has four full-time and 2 part-time pharmacists to provide 24-hour pharmacy coverage.  This means that every prescription is reviewed by one of our pharmacists before being administered to the patient.  This significantly reduces the risk of medication error.  Our pharmacists make every effort to see that the correct dosage has been ordered, the patient does not have a known allergy to the medication, and that there will be no drug interaction with other medications that the patient is taking.

Our pharmacy is Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) and USP 797 compliant.  This means that our pharmacy meets very strict requirements established by the nation’s leading standards-setting organizations for healthcare safety and quality.

Hours of Service
Cary Medical Center’s pharmacy is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 AM to 6:00 PM and weekends from 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM.  Our pharmacists are available 24-hours every day for after-hours prescription orders for patients in the hospital.

Services provided
Filling prescriptions for hospital patients accurately and timely includes a number of highly advanced, computerized systems.  First, the physician enters the medication order into the computer.  Instantly, the pharmacist is able to review and verify that the medication is appropriate for the patient based on patient health information that has already been entered into the computer system.  If the drug is appropriate for the patient, the pharmacist is able to automatically approve the dispensing of the medication and communicates this electronically to the patient’s nurse.  The nurse than verifies the information and retrieves the specific medication from the ‘Omni-Cell’, an automated medication dispensing system accessible on various hospital nursing units.  Even this machine has safety factors built in, such that only the drawer containing the specific patient’s medication is opened to the nurse, reducing the chance of selecting the wrong medication.  Once the nurse retrieves the medication, he or she will use a bar coding scanner to accurately match the medication to the patient.  This medication verification system is the most advanced method available to reduce the chance for medication error.  Cary Medical Center is among the top 2% of hospitals in the nation with such advanced technology.

In addition to filling prescriptions, our pharmacy team is dedicated to teaching patients, the staff, and our community about medication safety and new developments in pharmaceuticals.  They offer consultations to patients with diabetes or cardiovascular disease, provide training to clinical staff, assist in the proper disposal of expired or unused medications for the community, and address questions or concerns about medications for patients in the hospital and the general public.

Employees and volunteers of Cary Medical Center have the added benefit of purchasing discounted over-the-counter medications through the hospital gift shop.
