Cary Medical Center has received a 5-Star Rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) for Overall Hospital Quality Performance. CMS updated their Star Ratings on July 26th and Cary was one of four hospitals in Maine to earn 5-Stars. CMS compared 4,654 hospitals in the ‘Care Compare’ data set for 2023, only 483 hospitals, nationwide, earned 5-Stars. Kris Doody, RN, and CEO at Cary Medical Center said that she was so excited to share this news with staff at the hospital.
“What a tribute this 5-Star Rating is to all of our staff who have faced so many challenges in these past few years,” said Doody who is also CEO for Pines Health Services. “This recognition speaks not only to the quality of the care we provide but to the teamwork and personal commitment of every single individual in every department. To earn 5-Stars you really have to be at your best, every day. We are so proud of our team and we look forward to celebrating this great accomplishment.”
The overall rating system used by CMS shows how well each hospital performed on a set of quality measures compared to other hospitals in the U.S. The more stars, the better a hospital performed across five areas of quality: mortality, safety of care, readmission, patient experience, and timely and effective care. CMS also uses patient surveys for the star rating system.
The CMS Hospital Star Ratings are patient-facing tools to help consumers and their family members make decisions about where they can access care for planned procedures, like certain surgeries or giving birth.
“The primary objective of the Overall Hospital Quality Star Rating project is to summarize information from existing quality measures reported on Care Compare in a way that is useful and easy to interpret for patients and consumers through the development of a statistically sound methodology,” the agency writes in a report of the July 2023 rankings.
The other hospitals in Maine to receive a 5-Star rating were, Maine Medical Center, Maine General Medical Center and York hospital.
