Plant Based Nutrition – Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease
Sunday February 25, 2018 12:00 Noon – 4:00 pm
Chan Center – Cary Medical Center
The Healthy Hearts Plant Based Seminar will present information on the benefits of plant based nutrition. The program is based, in part, on the works of Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, Jr. and his ‘Best Selling’ book ‘Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease’. Registered Nurse Tami Smith will conduct the seminar. Tami has presented the program over the past two years and also follows up the seminar with a 4 week series of classes supporting individuals who choose to adopt plant based nutrition. There is a $40 fee for the seminar which covers all program materials and a heart healthy, plant based lunch.
Cary began offering the plant based nutrition program as part of an effort to reduce heart disease and stroke in Aroostook County. In 2011 the hospital received a grant from the AstraZeneca Healthcare Foundation to introduce the concept of plant based nutrition. Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, Jr. of the famed Cleveland Clinic visited Caribou and presented a lecture to both the medical staff and the community. Esselstyn is noted for his work with cardiovascular disease prevention and has counseled national celebrities such as former president Bill Clinton.
The physician, who is an Olympic Gold Medal Winner in Rowing and served as a combat surgeon in Vietnam, joined the Cleveland Clinic as a Vascular Surgeon and eventually became President of the Medical Staff. He began to wonder why so many young Americans had Vascular Disease. He began researching heart disease and studied many populations that experienced minimal heart disease. He connected the lack of the disease with nutrition and in recent years has treated hundreds of patients with severe heart disease. He treated patients by placing them on a total plant based diet. The vast majority of his patients were able to reverse their disease and go on to live a long and vigorous lifestyle. His patient success stories can be found at http://www.dresselstyn.com/site/success-stories/.
There is a $40 charge for the seminar that covers all materials and a plant based lunch.
Checks payable to Cary Medical Center. Payment accepted at registration on February 25th.
